Gu Xi has been puzzled lately.
There's something off about her cat's eyes.
It stares at her for too long. The internet says that might mean it's plotting something.
And when she scratches under its chin, its pupils dilate in shock before it quickly turns away.
When it sees someone else petting her, it crouches on top of the fridge, eyes narrowed to slits, its tail tip thrashing wildly at the air.
“Do you... know me?” Gu Xi once asked tentatively.
The cat's pupils narrowed to a slit.
It quickly turned away, pretending to lick its paw.
Later, Gu Xi dug out a group photo from her university days.
In the picture, a girl stands behind her, looking exactly like the cat.
They never said a word to each other that year.
Neither of them knew that the other was watching her, too.
Fifteen years later, the black cat grew old.
Holding her companion, Gu Xi asked softly, “Are you her?”
The cat didn't answer. It only used the last of its strength to lick Gu Xi's finger.
