Do I Still Have to Call You Mom?

Stepmother fiction / A story the author plans to write with complete abandon

Blurb:

Jiang Wanqing became a widow at thirty, with a sixteen-year-old stepdaughter to boot.

The huge inheritance is all held in trust. To receive her share, she must be acknowledged as a member of the family by her stepdaughter once the girl is an adult.

For the money, and to avoid becoming a laughingstock among her frenemy circle, Jiang Wanqing decides to stay in Britain as her stepdaughter's chaperone.

She's beautiful, manipulative, and nicknamed the Queen of Green Tea.

Sure she can win over a little girl in no time, she says:

"Sweetie, look! Mommy got you a cherry blossom pink mini Kelly with silver hardware!"

The girl asks, "What's the point of a bag that can't fit a computer?"

Jiang Wanqing gazes at her tenderly. "Sweetie, do you know how important you are to me? I'd do anything to make you happy."

The girl sets down her pen. "Then solve this math problem and explain it to me."

"..."

Meeting the girl's calm, dark eyes, Jiang Wanqing feels more lost than ever.

This is way too hard.

In tears, she packs her suitcase, planning to return home in the middle of the night, but a pair of hands drags her back.

The eighteen-year-old girl ties up her stepmother with the ribbon from her birthday cake.

"Didn't you say you'd do anything for me?"

The girl smiles warmly and speaks softly. "Jiang Wanqing, where are you going?"

Terrified and trembling, Jiang Wanqing still tries to put on a tough act. "You ungrateful little brat, after taking care of you for two years, you can't bring yourself to call me Mom? At least call me Auntie, can't you?"

The girl quietly begins to peel away her clothes.

That night, Jiang Wanqing is tied to a chair...

The girl brushes aside her damp bangs, wipes the tears from the corners of her eyes, and finally smiles with genuine warmth. "Jiang Wanqing, do you still want to hear me call you Mom?"
