Xie Yunzheng stood beneath the moonlit shadows of the trees, dressed in elegant brocade. His usually deep eyes were now covered in blood-red threads, and the pain in his heart threatened to burst from his chest.

He looked at the young woman before him, his voice so hoarse it was almost broken. "A Xue, from beginning to end, you approached me, got close to me, and pleased me all as part of your scheme, didn't you?"

Meng Yingxue lowered her eyes, her long lashes trembling, her face deathly pale. She knew Xie Yunzheng had been dragged into this innocently, but there was no turning back from some things.

All she could do was nod faintly, her voice clear and cold, every word as sharp as a blade. "Yes."

"Then during all this time," Xie Yunzheng choked, each word a struggle, "did you ever... even for a moment, love me?"

The wind stirred the flowers in the courtyard. A petal fell. Silence reigned.

After a long while, Meng Yingxue raised her eyes. There wasn't a trace of warmth in them.

"Never."
