Sharp-tongued, proud boy and sweet, sunny girl
Everyone in Wutong Alley knows that Xu An and Cheng Jiayou are sworn enemies.
It all goes back to middle school. Xu An was caught sneaking a look at a comic by her teacher and hid in a corner, crying in fear.
Cheng Jiayou, the young master, happened to see her on his way home from school and took a picture.
A soft laugh came from above her. "Want me to help you get it back?"
Cheng Jiayou made it sound easy. After carefully plotting together, they sneaked into the office, only to run straight into the grade director, who had doubled back to pick something up.
And so Lin Sui's punishment went from having her books confiscated to making a self-criticism in front of the whole school.
Along with the punishment came the widespread circulation of Xu An's ugly photo.
On the eve of the college entrance exams, the Cheng and Xu families went to a temple to pray for good fortune.
Watching Cheng Jiayou acting furtively, Xu An asked curiously, "What did you write?"
"Obviously, that I want to get rich," Cheng Jiayou replied nonchalantly.
Xu An scoffed. "Cheng Jiayou, you're still the same as when you were a kid, always daydreaming."
After they left, the wind flipped Cheng Jiayou's wish plaque over.
Neatly written on it were the words: I hope that idiot Xu An figures out how I feel soon.
After the college entrance exams, Xu An planned to confess to Cheng Jiayou. While she was pulling a ribbon, she unexpectedly collapsed.
Later, as she lay dying, she wrote Cheng Jiayou one last letter.
"I'm gone. Are you happy? Happy enough to set off fireworks in the alley for days? Don't worry, I'll haunt you even as a ghost. Cheng Jiayou, you must never forget me... Never mind. You should forget me after all."
"That tree we planted together as kids, I won't live to see it bloom next spring. Take a good look at it when the time comes, for both of us."
"Cheng Jiayou, the truth is, I've always wanted to say this: Xu An likes you. She likes you so, so much."
Sadly, she would never see that spring.
