During the Ghost Festival, Zhou Lin was burning paper money outside his shop when he accidentally witnessed a head being severed. The head of an unidentified woman rolled all the way into a storm drain, only to vanish without a trace, leaving a headless mystery.
The investigation hit a dead end, while one haunting incident followed another. On a night filled with icy winds, the staunch materialist Zhou Lin finally gave in and went to a hopelessly remote fortune-telling shop in the western suburbs, where he met Shen Xu, the "little immortal" from local folklore.
Shen means deep; xu means ruins. Shen Xu loves wearing black and is surrounded by black cats from all over the area. In Zhou Lin's words, he's "a brat with a rotten temper." He seems like no more than a streetwise fortune-teller who runs his shop in an illegal building, but in truth, he's an old acquaintance with old scores still unsettled. The only thing he likes is drawing turtles on rice paper.
After Zhou Lin decided Shen Xu was "a fraud," Shen Xu overturned everything Zhou Lin had learned in higher education with one inexplicable event after another.
