✅ This is a story about making a living and running a business. Sauce simmers on the stove, dolls are shaped under the eaves. One festival season follows another, and one scheme after another falls apart. If you don't have the patience for Xiaojiu's slow growth, don't force yourself.
The ninth daughter of the Shen family was born in Kexi Town, Yongjia County, Jiangnan.
Her family makes clay figurines called mohele for a living.
They're the little clay dolls every family sets out for the Qixi Festival: a boy holding a lotus leaf, dressed in a red vest and a green gauze skirt, displayed on the Qiqiao tower. Women burn incense and pray to them, asking for a son.
The Shen family has made, offered, and sold mohele for three generations, helping the town's wives pray for sons for three generations.
But in this generation, each of the family's three branches has had three daughters, for a total of nine girls.
The clan members mock them as "nine money-losing burdens" while plotting a "grand adoption scheme," hoping to conveniently take the Shen family's property and craft along with it.
The three branches stand up to argue with the clan and reach a consensus: if they can't pray for sons, they won't bother. They'll save as much as they can for the nine girls' dowries, so when they marry, they won't have any less than other families' daughters.
Xiaojiu grows up listening to the Shen family count their coins, and by the age of four she knows how to help out.
But the skills gradually coming back to her are from the twenty-first century: the complete art of silk-doll making, an intangible cultural heritage.
Business gets better and better. There are three-cash Yuqing clay dolls, four-cash Plague-Biting Dumplings, and lotus-flower craft stands that spin...
The family divides up the work and pulls together, saving one coin at a time.
But no matter how many coins they save, their line of work is still considered lowly in Great Yin.
The turning point comes when Xiaojiu is ten.
The Empress Dowager dies. A former palace woman official, her final edict concerns the cause she spent her life pursuing: workshops of all kinds may allow women to take examinations in their crafts. Those who pass will be appointed to official positions. They need not be confined to the palace, and will receive the same rank as men!
The young emperor is extremely filial. After three months of struggle with his ministers, the edict is established. But the ministers don't give way on everything. The craft examinations won't share the same list as the civil service examinations; they'll have a separate system called "selection through the crafts."
In name, it's lower than the civil service examinations, but those appointed receive the same rank and no less real power.
Xiaojiu now has something to hope for, and a goal to pursue. Every spring, each county holds an "arts examination." There are no restrictions on gender or age, and anyone with a particular skill may apply. Those who pass must then take the prefectural and capital examinations, and even demonstrate their craft before the emperor.
The top candidate in the highest grade is called the "Craft Laureate" and is awarded a plaque inscribed by the emperor, with honors to rival the top civil service examination graduate.
The Shen family has been locked into the artisan registry for three generations. If Xiaojiu passes, her entire family can leave it behind.
On the day she goes to the capital to present her craft, her eight older sisters row her along in three black-canopied boats. Xiaojiu sits at the bow and watches thirty stone bridges recede one by one.
None of the names carved on the bridge plaques as donors is Shen.
She turns to her sisters and says, "One day, we'll donate a bridge of our own!"
Her eldest sister laughs. "You're getting cocky!"
She's not cocky.
When women enter the world, they don't have to be dolls on a table, waiting for people to pray to them.
