Lu Zhao remembers everything about Jiang Zhuo.
For example, he only eats egg fried rice without scallions, and there's a tiny mole in the webbing between the thumb and index finger of his right hand.
So when the transfer student took a seat in the row ahead of him during their second year of high school, Lu Zhao knew at once:
It was him.
Jiang Zhuo remembers Lu Zhao, too.
For example, he used to press his folded-paper roses flat and tuck them into his textbooks, and he always brought an extra umbrella on rainy days.
So when Jiang Zhuo walked into the new classroom and caught the familiar silhouette by the window out of the corner of his eye, his heart skipped a beat.
Then he looked away and sat down in silence.
They both recognized each other.
They both thought the other had forgotten.
They both waited for the other to speak first.
Later, Lu Zhao took Jiang Zhuo by the wrist and stared at the mole in the webbing of his hand. His voice was quiet:
"In eighth grade, you took a picture of the northern lights in Finland."
"I spent the whole night looking up flights."
It turned out their reunion after all those years wasn't a coincidence.
Someone had never really left.
