Their wedding is approaching, and Ling Zhu is to marry Xing Wudu, Penglai's most famous and powerful sword cultivator.
Ling Zhu thought she would be the happiest woman in the world, until a woman appeared out of nowhere and said, "Xing Wudu is mine, and your life will be mine too."
"You're just his old childhood friend. I'm the heroine of this world."
The childhood friend always loses to the new girl. It's a common plot in romance stories. If Ling Zhu weren't the childhood friend, she might have clapped along too.
But she was the one being cast aside, so she went to Xing Wudu and complained, "That woman is ridiculous. She actually said you wouldn't marry me."
Xing Wudu met Ling Zhu's bright eyes and froze for a moment. He slowly removed the arms she had wrapped around his neck, his tone distant. "Junior Sister, I'm sorry."
"But what she said is true."
From then on, she lost her sword, her friends, and everything else. Ling Zhu and Xing Wudu also swore to part ways for good.
This plot was not only awful, but cruelly realistic.
There was nothing for it. Life went on. Later, Ling Zhu found a new partner and, after much thought, brought them to meet Xing Wudu.
"Please sign our marriage contract, Senior Brother."
Xing Wudu was a cold and restrained man, always the very picture of a gentleman, but this made him lose his composure for once.
He swung his sword and shredded the marriage contract. His fingertips trembled. "Ling Zhu, this marriage can never happen!"
Ling Zhu looked up at him, teasingly. "Senior Brother, what will your fiancée at home think if she sees you acting like this?"
*
After a hundred years as childhood friends, Xing Wudu was finally going to marry the woman he loved. But after a woman appeared, his memories gradually became confused. It was no longer Ling Zhu who had brought him extra clothes when he was sick, nor was it Ling Zhu who had stayed by his side when he was gravely injured. The woman had taken her place in every memory.
Only when Ling Zhu appeared before him with the marriage contract did his confused memories return to normal.
Though the damage had been done, he had no intention of letting her slip away.
He would set everything right with his own hands. So this time, he strung two severed heads on his sword and offered them to Ling Zhu as an apology. "Ling Zhu, the people who made us like this are all dead. Doesn't that make you happy?"
"Look at you. Why are you trembling with excitement?"
