She was once the Grand Princess Regent. After achieving her goals, she faked her death and disappeared, hiding away in Jiangnan, where she opened a general store and lived a quiet, uneventful life.
A scholar moved into the neighborhood. He had a good temper and a handsome face, but a terrible memory.
He often came to the shop to buy things on credit. Every time, he carefully wrote an IOU, stroke by stroke, signing his name in neat, proper characters, as if afraid she might forget it.
A lonely girl who ran a general store and an amnesiac schoolteacher, each harboring their own secrets, spent a peaceful stretch of time together.
Later, he woke up and asked her, “Who are you, really?”
She said, “I’m whoever you want me to be.”
He looked at her in silence for a long time, then asked, “Then who am I?”
She had known the answer before he did.
The story begins amid the bustle of Rongcheng and plum blossoms, and ends amid the blades and snowstorms of the capital.
