Ye Zifei had been in love many times, and broken up just as many times.
After each breakup, she had a set routine: cry, curse him out, then message Jiang Che
"Please?"
Jiang Che was her childhood friend, two years older, who had grown up practically sharing her pants and had been tasked with "looking after his little sister" since they were children.
When she couldn't climb a tree, he'd crouch down to be her step stool. When someone bullied her, he'd block their doorway and demand an explanation.
The one thing Ye Zifei had every right to do was depend on Jiang Che.
Whenever she came to him like this after a breakup, Jiang Che would post an official couple announcement with her.
Known throughout their school for his looks and grades, Jiang Che was more than enough to make her ex jealous.
Ye Zifei's little pride and vanity would be satisfied in an instant by everyone's gasps.
He teased her for being childish, but always indulged her.
Later, Jiang Che went to Beijing, then abroad.
After he returned to China, Ye Zifei occasionally saw him in the news: the youngest rising star in business, dressed in a suit, his expression cool and distant.
She stared at the photos for a long time, always feeling that the man in them wasn't the Jiang Che she knew.
But there was no time to feel awkward about it. She had something more urgent to deal with
she'd broken up again.
She opened their familiar chat and tapped out a flurry of messages.
"You there? Do you still mean what you said when we were kids?"
"My ex cheated on me and still has the nerve to act like he's right! At our class reunion, he told everyone I had princess syndrome and treated him like a servant!"
"Please?~"
Three minutes after she sent the messages, Jiang Che replied.
"Send me your location."
Ye Zifei had only planned to talk him into taking a photo with her, or editing one to get by.
But when the private room door opened, Jiang Che strode in with a cold expression.
He was even more handsome than in the news photos.
His black suit was sharply tailored, and his face warned everyone to keep their distance. Only his eyes and brows still held the contours of the boy she'd known.
After several years apart, Jiang Che was an even better catch, and he played along with her more smoothly, too.
Her ex ground his teeth while Ye Zifei's tail practically wagged up to the sky.
"You can delete that post now!"
Once it was all over, she cheerfully informed Jiang Che.
"Ye Zifei," he said, looking at her, his voice low.
"No."
He took a step forward.
Ye Zifei instinctively stepped back, her back hitting the wall.
Jiang Che braced one hand against the wall beside her ear and leaned down slightly.
She could even see the curve of his lashes, and the familiar angles in his eyes, now filled with unfamiliar emotions.
At that moment, those eyes were fixed on her, burning.
"What am I to you? Someone you can use when you want, then throw away when you're done?"
