Cheng Shijian is a legend at the municipal bureau. He has solved one bizarre case after another, and at a young age is already the head of its forensic department.
They say he can communicate with the dead and discern good from evil. No matter how strange or uncanny a case may be, he can find the key to it and bring the truth to light.
What no one knows is that he has a secret livestream. Cheng Shijian has been frail since childhood, and countless spirits and monsters covet his yin constitution.
To stay alive, he began cultivating at a Taoist temple and accumulating merit when he was five. Once he came of age, even the temple could no longer keep the spirits and monsters who wanted him dead at bay.
So he bound himself to a System called the Book of Yin and Yang. By livestreaming as he solved cases, he could earn large amounts of merit from the System and stay alive.
Cheng Shijian thrives at the municipal bureau.
Until one day, Captain Lu, transferred in from the provincial department, arrives at the bureau with a personal second-class merit citation and a wealth of accumulated merit.
A new boss is quick to make changes, and his first target is the forensic department.
It is all because Lu Zhi caught the forensic examiner talking quietly to a corpse in the autopsy room. Anyone else would have been scared witless by the sight, but Lu Zhi is no ordinary person.
"Dr. Cheng, please maintain professional boundaries and don't indulge in superstition," Lu Zhi says with a frown.
Uh-oh, he's been caught.
But the other man has such profound merit that he practically radiates righteousness, and doesn't seem to have noticed anything suspicious.
Cheng Shijian looks up without a trace of embarrassment. "Captain Lu, you've only been here three days, and you're already ordering me around?"
"Dr. Cheng, watch your tone. I'm your superior."
"What a dogmatic attitude!"
And that's how their feud begins.
Until one day, Cheng Shijian realizes that Captain Lu may not be human either...
Not in the literal sense...
The top's identity is still being worked out.
