A girl who never plays by the rules and only wants to survive x an aloof, sharp-tongued, patriarchal father figure
Huai Xiaoyue is a little orphan from a village, an ordinary mortal.
To escape the villagers' bullying, she sets her sights on the badly injured man she brought home.
He is so weak he can barely catch his breath, so she takes that as consent, presses his head down, and marries him.
The man can't carry a shoulder pole or lift anything, and he's thin-skinned, too, unable to hide his disdain.
Fortunately, he makes a passable pretend "man of the house," and she shamelessly nurses him back to health, stumbling along the way.
One day, a group of sect disciples bursts in. Her "husband" regains his memories, leaves behind a jade pendant, and strides away.
Before leaving, he says reluctantly, "I owe you my life. I'll repay you someday, and make good on the karma between us."
She doesn't understand what he means by karma. A flood leaves her homeless, so she has no choice but to clutch the pendant and set out for her "ex-husband's" sect.
Only when she sees the familiar face seated high above does she realize that the man is none other than Mu Yichen, the famed Silent Master of Tianyi Sect.
A figure so far above her that she is no more than a speck of mud in a field beneath his feet. She could build a ladder to the heavens and still never brush the hem of his robe.
Nervously gripping the pendant, she gathers her courage and asks, "You said you'd repay me. Do you still mean it?"
The disciples around her see her coarse clothes and laugh at her delusions.
"A crude country girl, trying to attach herself to our master."
"She must be infatuated with him, dreaming of rekindling their old romance."
"We can't actually call a village girl our master's wife, can we?"
The noble master sitting above them wears an indifferent expression and sneers inwardly. Though unwilling, he forces himself to say, "I gave my word, so I will honor it."
The entire hall is stunned. The disciples hurriedly try to dissuade him, and some even draw their swords and turn them on her.
In the middle of the chaos, she suddenly drops to her knees, raising the emerald-green jade pendant above her head. Her voice rings out, clear and bright:
"Master, please accept this disciple's bow!"
