Shan Heng was born intersex and was driven out of the household with his mother.
When he was three, his mother died of illness, and he was taken back into the household.
When he was five, he was allowed to study and practice calligraphy alongside the other young masters.
When he was seven, his brothers discovered his intersex body. During the Lantern Festival, his older brother abandoned him.
Because of his unusual body, he was sold from one person to another until he ended up in the palace, where he became a male companion.
And so began a life as rootless as duckweed...
