A legend has been passed down among mortals.
Seven hundred years ago, Yue Shifeng, the most notorious traitor in the Liuyue Kingdom, sought the hand of General Chu Lanying, a renowned military commander.
But on their wedding night, both newlyweds died in their bridal chamber, leaving behind an unsolved mystery.
Chu Lanying killed Yue Shifeng with her own hands, ridding the Liuyue Kingdom of its great traitor. It was a cause for celebration.
But she died soon after.
When heaven and earth first opened, the pair of star-crossed lovers met opposite fates: one ascended to godhood, while the other became a vengeful ghost.
Who could have imagined that Yue Shifeng, a wicked man condemned by everyone, would be the one to ascend, while Chu Lanying, honorable and celebrated for her military victories, would become a ghost?

Chu Lanying appeared out of nowhere and became one of the Four Ghost Kings guarding the Netherworld. The heavens were thrown into turmoil and braced for disaster.
All three realms began gossiping about the tangled love and hate between the new Ghost King and Lord Ximo, Yue Shifeng. Meanwhile, Chu Lanying was sharpening her tools, ready to build a new life in her territory
She was busy reclaiming the underworld's lands, which had been rendered barren by the ghostly aura, farming, and opening a restaurant. She'd put down her armor and taken up a peaceful country life.
As she enjoyed her life in the Netherworld, Chu Lanying would occasionally look up at the sky and remember the only person she'd felt guilty about in all her seven hundred years.
Her not-quite-familiar husband, Yue Shifeng.
She'd heard he'd ascended to the heavens, become a high-ranking divine official, earned the world's reverence and offerings of incense, and shone with glorious divine light... He'd probably forgotten all about her by now.
But when Chu Lanying saw Yue Shifeng again, she realized he still held a grudge over the time she'd stabbed him seven hundred years ago.
When she was alive, Chu Lanying had a heart of iron toward Yue Shifeng. Now that she was a ghost, she kept softening and giving in to him.
Gods and ghosts were meant to go their separate ways. She wanted to repay what she owed him, then move on with their lives and have nothing more to do with each other.
"Repay what you owe me...? Chu Lanying, don't even think about it!" He pressed closer, relentless as a storm, leaving her no room to breathe.
"I'll make sure you think of me for a thousand, ten thousand years, right up until the moment my spirit is destroyed... Wife."
Only then did Chu Lanying realize she'd made a colossal mistake: she'd provoked a god who was even more terrifyingly ghostlike than any ghost.
