This World Can't Do Without Dogs

As the wind swept through the town at the turn of spring and summer, a black-and-white border collie once again set off at its appointed hour, retracing a route more familiar than any other.

From home, past the old street, the tea shop, and the crossroads; across the zebra crossing when the light turned green; pausing beneath the old locust tree, then heading west, all the way to the place where its owner's scent disappeared.

The dog's name was Deng Deng.

Its owner was missing.

Five lonely people were quietly linked by this stubborn route.

Seven-year-old Xiao Qi had stopped speaking after losing her mother.

Retired police officer Lao Wu was trapped in guilt over his wife's death.

The dyed-blond young man Ahao seemed to have disappointed the whole world.

Granny Sun lived at home in quiet unease.

The one-legged veteran Daliu kept to himself.

Deng Deng was waiting for someone to come home, but unexpectedly healed the loneliness of many people in town.

The world is falling apart, and the little dog keeps stitching it back together. I'm jealous of all you people who have dogs.
