Chen Yuniang was once the celebrated star courtesan of Ningxian House in the capital, as well as the most covert spy in a powerful minister's hands.
To survive, she did things she was ashamed of and watched with her own eyes as the man at her side was led to the executioner's block.
She thought that if she took the money and escaped the capital, she could live out her days in peace.
But fate came full circle. One day she was caught, and fell into the hands of the very man she had once betrayed.
To save her own skin, Chen Yuniang acted at once, squeezing out tears and using her old trick again: "My lord... I was forced into it back then. I had no choice!"
Pei Yanyu looked down at her, his smile chilling: "Yuniang, do you think I'll believe you again?"
Chen Yuniang thought she was as good as dead this time, with enemies all over the capital waiting to feast on her flesh and drink her blood. But although the man mocked her with cutting words, time and again he shielded her from deadly peril.
Only later did Chen Yuniang realize:
Those in the capital who wanted her dead couldn't even get through the gates of the Pei residence. Pei Yanyu wasn't trying to torment her at all. He was keeping her firmly within his territory, refusing to let her leave again.
[My supposedly dead ex has shown up in front of me and wants to drag me back to the capital?]
