A resilient, clueless commoner heroine x a dignified, self-controlled regent who gradually turns into a complete lunatic
In the seventh year of Yuanping, the emperor died suddenly in the prime of his life. The lords of the four corners of the realm each harbored ambitions for the throne. The late emperor's eleventh son came to the capital to save the dynasty, took the position of regent, and assumed control of the court.
But rather than calling him the "Regent," people were more accustomed to calling this eleventh prince the "Demon-Faced Prince."
Hua Fuling wandered alone through the streets and alleys. Whenever she heard rumors, she wanted to speak up in his defense. But as a humble country doctor with no status or influence, she could only keep quiet.
The regent was imposing and charismatic, wielding power over the entire court. His formidable authority was more than enough to silence everyone. Someone as insignificant as her had no need to speak up for him.
Then one day, Hua Fuling ran into a strange man who told her she was born with the destiny of a phoenix and fated to become the mother of the nation.
Hua Fuling tapped her head and waved him off honestly. "You have a serious head ailment. I'm afraid I can't help you."
But he wouldn't let it go. As they tussled, she accidentally tore down the recruitment notice seeking a doctor for the city.
And so, by a twist of fate, Hua Fuling entered the regent's manor.
Everyone said the regent was sinister and unpredictable because he'd suffered from a secret illness since childhood.
Once inside the manor, she realized every rumor was true!
Not only was his temper impossible to predict, but his thoughts were often muddled, making him difficult to understand.
"My sixteenth brother went to great lengths to send you here, and this is all he taught you?"
The regent casually straightened his robe. The cold hilt of his sword lifted her chin, a murderous glint in his eyes.
Hua Fuling looked up, cheeks flushed and eyes slightly moist, her thoughts in turmoil:
So fragrant, so fair, so handsome... so pitiful.
Seeing the crisscrossing, terrible scars on his body, Hua Fuling resolved to cure the secret illness plaguing him.

In less than a year, the regent had completely recovered from his chronic illness. Hua Fuling became ever more influential in the manor, and everyone there said she was about to rise to greatness. Even the empress dowager planned to summon her in person, with a marriage proposal in mind.
But after drinking too much, she let slip the secret that the regent suffered from a hidden illness. The court was shaken, and rumors spread throughout the streets.
Knowing she'd caused a disaster, and feeling that her debt of gratitude had been repaid, Hua Fuling realized she had no reason to stay in the manor. So, amid the chaos, she fled the capital.
She never imagined that once she was gone, the usually composed and restrained regent would cast off all his dignity and self-control, scour the entire realm, and drag her back to his side no matter what.
"Didn't you say you wanted to repay me?" His scorching breath brushed her ear, making Hua Fuling shiver all over.
"I believe the best way to repay me is to give yourself to me."
Bonus scene:
On their wedding night, Hua Fuling was held tightly against the bed. Only then did she realize, to her horror, that his secret illness, which had plagued him for years, had never been cured.
She trembled and stammered in panic. "Y-Your Highness, did you stop taking your medicine?"
The regent paused, then murmured softly, "Medicine?"
He leaned over her, his heavy breath drawing near. "You are my medicine."
