Synopsis
"Gu Chengze! Is this the world you want, with its people suffering?" Xiao Chenghuai sat astride his horse, staring at that snow-blue figure and shouting himself hoarse.
Flames soared behind him, turning half the sky red. Gu Chengze lowered his eyes and sighed. His voice was so calm it seemed utterly devoid of emotion. "Perhaps."
Xiao Chenghuai trembled all over as he held the barely breathing Gu Chengze tightly, his knuckles turning white.
Gu Chengze's consciousness slowly drifted away, leaving him filled with self-loathing. A sinner like him, bearing a blood feud and stained with blood, had never deserved to live. But if the world was nothing but filth and mire, then all he wished was for the person before him, who had done everything in his power to protect him, to enjoy a life of peace and fulfillment.
Gu Chengze faced him with his blade, his gaze cold as ice. Every word rang out with conviction. "Xiao Yanshan, you usurped the throne and humiliated your sovereign, slaughtered loyal officials, and drove the people to misery. Today, I shall enforce Heaven's justice and restore righteousness!"
Xiao Chenghuai froze in place, forced to watch Gu Chengze advance on the palace step by step, a blade pressed to his own neck, and his father die horribly amid the chaos of battle.
For five years, he had never truly seen through Gu Chengze.
For five years, beneath that cool and composed exterior lay a searing hatred that ate away at the soul.
Those five years, it turned out, had been the happiest of Gu Chengze's life.
During the Wu Dynasty, three kingdoms stood in opposition. Wu held the Central Plains, Wei controlled the southwest, and the small, weak Qi was caught between them. The Xiongnu watched hungrily from the north, while foreign nations across the Eastern Sea launched repeated incursions. Crises brewed on all sides.
After the Shangyuan Festival, one disaster followed another: the death of Changsun Hong, an invasion from the Eastern Sea, war between Wu and Wei, and a struggle over the succession to the crown prince. The people suffered, and the land was laid waste. Were these events accidents, or had someone deliberately plotted them?
A prophecy circulated throughout the land: "When the Seven Stars appear, a sage shall descend. Liang shall rise again, the realm shall be united, and the four seas shall become one."
Bearing a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood on his shoulders, Gu Chengze wandered alone, stirring up turmoil across the realm with one hand and unsettling the heart of Prince An, Xiao Chenghuai. His road to revenge stretched far ahead. He used hatred as his game pieces and his own body as a blade, but at the end of this road of no return, would he avenge his great wrongs, or fall into eternal ruin?
