Shang Xu is an obscure paranormal livestreamer whose audience never reaches double digits.
With her rent coming due and no effort on her part meaning she'd have to starve, she grits her teeth and heads to the supposedly most haunted apartment building online to investigate.
Blood bubbles up from the bathroom sink, ghastly cries echo down the hallway, and the protective charm she bought to save her life mysteriously disappears.
On her first night there, a floating ghost watches her sleep, while blood-red words seep out onto the wall: "Guess who I am."
She shakes her head like a rattle drum. "I really don't know."
Her livestream audience finally breaks a thousand, and she's so excited she nearly cries.
A long string of comments flashes past at lightning speed, every one of them exactly the same.
"Streamer, streamer, what's that behind you?"
She turns around. Something unidentified is lying on the floor, neither alive nor dead.
Its face is frighteningly pale, and when she checks its nose, there's no breath at all.
She's terrified. At last, the other person slowly wakes up, opens their eyes, and says the first thing that comes to mind:
"Mom."
Mom, mom, mom...
Shang Xu: ???
A young woman becomes a mother without pain. Is this the collapse of human nature, or the decay of morality?
"Actually, I'm the cat you saved by accident all those years ago..."
Shang Xu brightens.
"...beside the flower next to the sparrow that was crushed beneath the third stone from the left."
"What do those two things have to do with each other?"
Xie Sui shakes his head. Countless invisible tentacles wrap tightly around her. A familiar scent fills his nostrils, and, smiling, he slowly calls out, "...Mom."
Mom, big sister, beloved. My Xu Xu, you push me away with your endless lies, piercing my scarred and battered body.
But what does that matter?
"Feed me with your blood."
