Hong Kong Supernatural Case Files [The Nineties]

At twenty-six, Fang Zhengqi is a uniformed officer at West Ring Number Seven Police Station, later transferring to plainclothes. His colleagues think he is too serious, so everyone calls him A Zheng.

Three years ago, while arresting a thief, a stray bullet grazed the back of his head. He survived and unlocked a weak Yin-Yang Eye: he cannot see evil ghosts or vengeful spirits, only small, ordinary spirits with unfinished business, like a granny who lost her mahjong tiles, a vendor looking for herbal tea, a stall owner whose char siu was stolen, and a neighborhood elder who got lost.

Yet he firmly believes, "There are no ghosts in this world. Everything has a rational explanation!"

Neon lights flicker, lottery tickets are everywhere, and the air around the dai pai dong stalls is thick with smoke and the bustle of life. Gangsters hustle for a living on the streets, and ordinary folks get caught up in all sorts of chaos. Major cases are rare, but strange incidents are everywhere.

The earnest, straightforward A Zheng solves cases with spirits "feeding him clues," but refuses to believe in ghosts and spirits, constantly convincing himself that it is all logical deduction and exceptional observation skills. He is tough-mouthed but soft-hearted, extremely socially anxious, hates trouble, and has a strong sense of principle. He always solves cases by accidentally stumbling on the right answer, with one ridiculous mix-up after another.
