After graduating from university, Fan Yuanhe became a chemistry teacher at Liutong No. 4 High School. Just a short while after starting there, he was assigned to Class 13, the worst class in the school, and made its homeroom teacher.
Fan Yuanhe was already unhappy with the arrangement, and on his very first day teaching the class, he got into a clash with Class 13's resident troublemaker.
"Director, can I switch classes?" He rushed over to complain, unable to take it anymore. "I really can't handle Class 13, especially Tai Hanwen. He's just..."
Before he could finish, the director gave him a couple of meaningful pats on the shoulder.
"Young people need to face setbacks to grow. I'm giving you this chance to build character."
Fan Yuanhe: "..." If you want to dump this on me, just say so!
Who could have guessed that a year later, Tai Hanwen would rise from being a notorious troublemaker to showing up at school every day and attending every class without fail?
"Did he change overnight? Is there someone else inside him now?" His classmates were astonished.
Only in the dead of night would Tai Hanwen crouch by Teacher Fan's window, notebook in hand, grinning from ear to ear.
"Teacher Fan, just one last problem, okay? I'll give you a green lemon to eat."
"Get lost!"
With red-rimmed eyes, Teacher Fan hurled a pillow at Tai Hanwen's face. Tai Hanwen hugged it and grinned even wider.

Fan Yuanhe's diary:
After earning my master's degree, I refused to continue on to a PhD in a mild bout of adult rebellion and went to teach at a middle school in a county town.
In those two short years, I got to know so many young people. They struggled at the bottom, wrestled with the problems of adolescence, argued over their relationships with their parents, and for all sorts of reasons couldn't see any light ahead.
Of all those kids, the one who left the deepest impression on me was Tai Hanwen...
I have to admit, his presence changed many of my old, entrenched ideas...
If life's course is like a mountain spring winding toward the sea, then perhaps I, a little pebble, really can shift their paths, just a little, so they don't dry up in the mountains but keep flowing toward the sea.
