Ultraman: In the Rift of Light

Among the 18 billion residents of the Land of Light, Mestia was the most ordinary one.

So ordinary that... she had never left her home star system, never faced a monster head-on, and never done anything that could be written up as a "heroic deed" in a textbook.

In her 15,500 years of life as an Ultraman, it seemed she had never experienced a single thing aliens stereotypically associated with Ultramen.

Perhaps living an ordinary, happy life as an ordinary Ultraman would be a fine choice.

But fate seemed to favor this child with her unusual coloring.

She was born after the Great Ultra War ended, when the catastrophe that had nearly destroyed the Land of Light had only just passed. The smoke had yet to clear, and the Plasma Spark Tower had only regained its brightness a few years earlier.

When Mestia first became aware of the world, the first thing she touched was not the warmth of her parents' hands, but the cold surface of an Ultra Capsule.

The postwar reconstruction period was truly difficult.

The new systems were still being worked out, supplies were extremely scarce, and orphanages were being built one after another. War orphans were everywhere, and Mestia was one of them. Everything needed a great deal of time to improve, change, and heal.

But Mestia was lucky.

Thanks to her rare gold-and-silver coloring and snowflake-like patterns, she received plenty of attention and care from a very young age. The adults, scarred by the war, always seemed willing to save a little of their remaining tenderness for this adorable child.

Mestia didn't mind their attention.

The little girl stood by the nursery window, watching the other children who had also lost their parents, and silently made a promise to herself.

I will do everything I can to make things better.

At the time, she had no idea that this promise would take up all fifteen thousand years of her life.
