Xie Jianing always thought Chen Jin, her senior, was being a little too nice to her.
When she fainted during military training, he brought her food. When she interviewed for the psychology club, he waited outside. Before her English competition, he practiced with her for half an hour every day, rain or shine. When she fell asleep at her desk after a tiring practice, she woke to find him standing beside her. He’d been there for nearly fifty minutes.
“Why didn’t you sit down while you waited?”
“I didn’t want to wake you.”
She asked why he was so nice to her. He said, “Your brother asked me to look after you.”
She believed him.
Until one day, she came across a little white cat in the garden.
It was always rubbing against her and nudging her hand with its head, listening as she confided her worries and said, “I like a senior, but I don’t know what he thinks of me.”
What she didn’t know was that the cat was him.
He turned into a cat just to be closer to her. Just to hear her say what she really felt.
Later, she accidentally opened his notebook.
Written inside were the words: car accident, grave, bargain, reborn. Every page was about her, and every page was about waiting.
There was also a line in tiny handwriting:
“I turned into a cat again today. She held me and said she liked me. It was worth it.”
Only then did she learn that he had traded his life twice just to meet her again.
And she had forgotten him for two whole lifetimes.
“I’m not brave. I’ve just waited too long.”
“If I keep waiting, I’ll go mad.”
At last, she finally remembered. At the orphanage, the boy who crouched in front of her and handed her candy hadn’t said, “Goodbye.”
He had said, “Wait for me. I’ll come back for you.”
And he did. As a human, as a cat, in any form that could bring him close to her.
“You’ve already petted me. By rounding things up, that means we’re together.”
“Next time I turn into a cat, I’ll meow three times first to let you know it’s me.”
“But what if you keep turning into a cat?”
“Then I’ll keep meowing.”
