Heaven's Civil Servant

As the oldest angel in all of Heaven,

Alice had never known what it meant to take a vacation.

When she was born, the very concept of a "vacation" did not exist in this world.

Her office was right at Heaven's gate,

and she had been working for so long

that her job looked very... simple.

So the first question every new angel asked when they arrived in Heaven was:

"Can I do her job?"

The angels who brought them would hush them,

because her work was actually very difficult,

and new angels shouldn't be rude to the oldest angel in charge.

That's right. Once the whole system of Heaven had been established,

they made her the supervisor.

They even gave her an ID badge,

though she couldn't see what it was for.

Later, she got a "neighbor."

They built another office across from hers

and assigned a slightly younger angel to it.

When work got tedious, she would sometimes watch what the angel across the hall was doing.

Her "neighbor" worked every day just like she did,

which pleased her.

But one day,

her neighbor actually walked out with a rolling suitcase!

She left the office!

Alice had never done that.

So for the first time, she asked a question:

"What did that person next door go off to do?"

"She went on vacation."

Vacation?

No one had ever told me I could take a vacation!

Alice was furious:

Why won't you let me take a vacation? I want one, too!
