He Zhouxing first met Wen Xi at a matchmaking banquet arranged by their families.
She sat demurely across from him, gentle and quiet, beautiful as a portrait of a motionless beauty.
She was pretty. That was He Zhouxing's impression of her that day.
Pretty, and nothing more.
Like a soulless porcelain doll, delicate and fragile, suited only to be put on display.
After marrying He Zhouxing, Wen Xi acted exactly the same way.
Gentle and obedient, even when fulfilling her marital duties, she always let him do as he pleased.
He Zhouxing had never met a more obedient young lady from a respectable family.
Sometimes he thought there was nothing wrong with being well-behaved. It was a little dull, but at least their married life was harmonious.
Only three months into their marriage, He Zhouxing began to think he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Wen Xi.
Everything changed at a gathering with friends.
He Zhouxing had just arrived at the club at a friend's invitation when a familiar voice came from the private room opposite.
"Grandpa only wants me to get married and have a child. If I wait another year and have his baby, then my task will be done."
"After that, who needs men anyway?"
He Zhouxing froze mid-stride. The woman's words echoed in his ears.
Who needs men anyway?
So all this time, he'd been nothing but her free labor?
He yanked off his tie and shoved open the private room door.
In the dimly lit room, his usually decorous little wife was sprawled half-drunk on a chaise longue in a conspicuous red spaghetti-strap dress. When she looked at him with her hazy eyes, her gaze seemed to melt into a stream.
As if she couldn't see the anger on his face, she reached out to him with a tipsy, sweet smile, looking just like a lazy cat. "Hubby, hold me!"
"If my wife is dissatisfied with me, that's the husband's fault. I guess I haven't been trying hard enough lately."
He scooped the half-drunk Wen Xi into his arms, carried her downstairs, and tossed her into the car.
Back at their marital home, Wen Xi paid dearly that night for her careless words.
After that, He Zhouxing seemed to have taken a good, hard look at himself. The man who used to work overtime every other day started coming home earlier and earlier, and put in more and more effort at night.
Wen Xi was troubled. Given He Zhouxing's stamina and their frequency, she'd originally planned to get pregnant within a year.
She hadn't expected that the longer they were married, the harder he would try, yet he still hadn't given her a chance to get pregnant.
A year into their marriage, there was still no sign of a child, and Wen Xi decided to call it quits.
What kind of marriage was this? It was nothing but hard labor.
The night Wen Xi brought up divorce, He Zhouxing got drunk.
The usually pampered man buried his face in the crook of her shoulder, his voice bitter. "Wen Xi, if we really have to get divorced, could you take me with you when you leave? I'm not picky. I don't even need a title."
Wen Xi: "..."
