The mountains of northeastern Yunnan cannot confine the wings of a dream.
In 1995, Zhu Yue left the mountains of Zhaotong with her parents and put down new roots in a stone house in Dongchuan. The pomegranate tree behind the house bore witness to the family's hardships: her mother fell ill from overwork, her older brother gave up his studies, and her older sister struggled under the pressure to have a child.
Zhu Yue studied beneath the plane trees in Kunming, unaware that her mother had quietly passed away. Her exceptional performance in the college entrance exam became her final unspoken understanding with her mother.
Years later, when Zhu Yue knelt before her mother's grave with her own daughter, she finally understood the promises that had gone unfulfilled. The Taiwanese sausage she never got to eat, the final farewell she missed: both became the strength that carried her forward.
This is a story of growing up and regret, parting and reconciliation. Against the backdrop of changing times, it tells how an ordinary woman, burdened by promises left unfulfilled, learned to become her own light.
