Some plants in the forest produce natural toxins to keep themselves from being eaten. If birds eat too much, they may get diarrhea, stomachaches, or other symptoms of poisoning.

The clay along riverbanks contains minerals. When eaten, it can absorb toxins in the stomach. Not only parrots, but many wild animals eat dirt to stop diarrhea and detoxify themselves.

Only large parrots in the wild eat dirt. Pet parrots and small parrots don't.
