[Blurb revised]
That winter when they were seventeen, Ji Han gave his scarf to Shen Dongzhi.
It was only a scarf, but he remembered it for seven years.
Shen Dongzhi was waiting, too. Waiting for him to speak, waiting for him to look back, waiting for him to say the words he kept buried in his heart.
But neither of them said a thing.
Later, he was in Beijing, and she was in Hangzhou. Seven years apart, seven years of longing.
It was raining in Hangzhou the day they reunited. Ji Han stood outside the station, drenched from head to toe.
Shen Dongzhi ran up to him. Her eyes reddened as she looked at him.
"What are you doing here?"
"I missed you."
They thought that this time, at last, they could be together.
But every gift fate gives comes with an expiration date.
"From now on, we'll spend every winter together."
He said those words twice.
The first time, he wrote them on a snowman. They were eighteen then.
The second time, he said them at her hospital bedside. They were fifty then.
The day he left, heavy snow fell over Beijing.
Shen Dongzhi hung his scarf on his gravestone and watched it flutter for a long time.
"In our next life," he said, "I'll be the one to speak first."
[The previous blurb no longer met my needs, and the story had changed, so I had to revise it. I'm truly sorry, and I want to apologize to everyone.]
