Wu Qimu is naturally cruel and vicious, with a particular talent for corpse refinement and Gu cultivation. The righteous sects have put a bounty on his head for years.
He fails to assassinate a prodigy disciple of the righteous sects and is instead pursued for a thousand miles by the Sword Venerable. They both enter the Mirror of Forgetting Dust and spend a lifetime as lovers bound by love and hate they cannot put aside.
When the mirror shatters and the dream ends, Wu Qimu's soul returns to his body. But the Sword Venerable's three souls have scattered, and only the heart-guarding soul of a cultivator of the same realm can save him.
The heart-guarding soul is like a mortal's heart: it grows alongside its cultivator, and if it shatters, the cultivator dies.
In the end, love lasts longer than hate. Wu Qimu bites down hard on the Sword Venerable's icy lips and seeks a sliver of hope for him.
There are only four Mahayana cultivators in the world, all renowned sect leaders, distinguished and difficult to approach.
With no other choice, Wu Qimu becomes a pure and harmless disciple under one of the twelve leaders of the righteous sects, an Immortal Venerable. He seduces him again and again until the aloof Immortal Venerable can no longer restrain himself, shares his bed night after night, and takes him as his cultivation partner.
Next, under the guise of a spoiled young master from a mortal clan, he repeatedly abducts a medicine immortal with a peerless mastery of the Dao, threatening the lives of the medicine immortal's mortal family and friends to force him to marry.
Then he becomes an abandoned husband, unable to understand love and neglected by his spouse, and has intimate heart-to-hearts beneath the moon with a Buddhist who was born surrounded by holy light. He asks the Buddhist to save someone by offering his body, and secretly pledges himself to him.
Wu Qimu coldly watches these foolish leaders, who stand above the clouds, dancing in the palm of his hand. Fighting off his disgust, he tricks them into willingly surrendering their heart-guarding souls to save the person he truly loves.
But the moment the beloved he has labored so hard to protect, day after day, opens his eyes from the frost, an icy blade of hatred flashes in his gaze. Before Wu Qimu can react, he summons his life-bound sword and drives it through Wu Qimu's heart.
"Fool."
As he draws his last breath, Wu Qimu sees his beloved's thin lips part, his expression as cold as it was when he pursued him for a thousand miles.
