Road to Grand, its original title, means the road to a Grand Slam. It is also the name of a documentary, and the original inspiration for writing this long novel. The road to a Grand Slam is never smooth. Only the most talented and determined can hope to touch that trophy.
From a child newly arrived in France, eager to join a club, to a teenage prodigy making a name for himself in France and across Europe, and finally a tennis superstar cheered on by the whole world, Yukimura never lets his dreams remain dreams.
Reading guide:
1. Both leads are sexually inexperienced, one-on-one romance, and they don't get together until adulthood. The romance develops slowly.
2. They pursue each other mutually. There is a substantial romance, but the main purpose of this novel is to provide the vinegar for Yukimura's journey to becoming the GOAT.
3. Yukimura goes to France at age six and becomes a French citizen at thirteen. As mentioned above, the story has little overlap with the original, though Yukimura still crosses paths with some original characters.
4. This is realistic competitive tennis, not fantasy tennis.
5. The story is expected to cover his retirement at age 37 and the year or two of retirement that follow, including his psychological changes.
