Opening in October.
Gu Chao never imagined that just after finally being made a full-time employee, with a promotion to project team leader seemingly within reach, an incoming manager would casually snatch the project away from him.
And take the position above him.
The new manager was named Jiang Jinyue. Rumor had it he was a widower, with a face so stunning it seemed almost wicked. Gossip about him had never stopped circulating around the company.
People exchanged knowing looks about how he'd gotten his position and what he might have done to earn it.
The first time Gu Chao saw the person behind the desk, he had sharply defined features, as if drawn with a single stroke, and was too beautiful to seem real.
Gu Chao thought: Damn, he's quite a looker.
Unfortunately, Jiang Jinyue was always sharp-tongued and sarcastic, and the two didn't get along.
Until one day, Gu Chao was cursing his ancestors at his desk one moment and being called into the office the next.
Jiang Jinyue spoke calmly. "I'm pregnant. The child is yours."
Gu Chao: "...Huh?"
*
Gu Chao was convinced he'd been made a sucker.
He'd never even touched this man. Where had the child come from?
But Jiang Jinyue was just too good-looking. His face was clearly cold and indifferent, yet the loose fabric stretched over the gentle curve of his pregnant belly. Sometimes he'd raise a hand to rub his lower back, and Gu Chao would find himself bending over backward to be nice to him.
The way the men at the company looked at Jiang Jinyue made Gu Chao sick.
He wanted to pluck out every last one of their eyeballs.
The office rumor was that Director Jiang had a locked photo album on his phone, full of pictures of his late unrequited love.
More than once, Gu Chao had caught Jiang Jinyue murmuring to the album, his normally cold features softening with tenderness.
Gu Chao told himself it had nothing to do with him, but he began having dreams he shouldn't have had.
In the dreams, the person who normally couldn't be bothered to spare him a glance would obediently and gently lift his face. His eyes were red and wet with tears, his lips glistening, as he called out someone's name in a hoarse voice.
Gu Chao was consumed with jealousy.
Those scenes he hadn't even dared to dream about had already belonged to someone else.
He thought he must be going crazy. Lusting after a widower carrying a child made him a beast.
But he couldn't control himself.
His possessiveness burned so fiercely he couldn't sleep through the night. He could no longer tell whether this overwhelming impulse was a moral failing or love.
Then one late night, Gu Chao passed Jiang Jinyue's office and found him curled up asleep on the sofa, his phone loosely in his hand, its screen still lit.
Gu Chao walked over, intending to drape a coat over him, but his eyes fell on the screen before he could stop himself.
The photo album was open.
Inside was his own face.

Jiang Jinyue's husband, Gu Chao, died, and Jiang Jinyue attended his funeral.
When he opened his eyes again, he had returned to six years earlier.
Young Gu Chao was sitting at his desk on an ordinary morning when he saw someone who shouldn't have been there.
Jiang Jinyue pushed open the door and met those startled yet vividly alive eyes.
