When Qian Qian was twenty-five, she felt she had lucked into the greatest stroke of fortune imaginable.
Her husband, who had been away from home for three days after their wedding, died in someone else’s bed. She didn’t shed a single tear. In fact, while checking the list of his assets, she almost laughed out loud.
This marriage of convenience, in which both sides got what they wanted, set her free in a way that was absurd yet merciful.
The first time she met Xu Zhizhi, the girl was in her teens, shuttling between the homes of various relatives. She wouldn’t even dare take an extra helping of her favorite dish from the table, and looked at Qian Qian timidly.
That gaze was just like her own, back when she had no one to rely on.
So when the Civil Affairs Bureau called and asked whether this nominal “aunt by marriage” would take on this hot potato, Qian Qian thought, Why not treat it like raising a potted plant or a cat?
Life was too dull, and there was nothing unpleasant about the girl’s eyes.
She brought Xu Zhizhi home.
She taught her to paint, to stand up straight, and to understand that in this not-so-fair world, if you want something, you have to go and take it yourself.
She watched the timid girl slowly grow up... and build a life of her own.
Qian Qian thought this was simply a long, tender farewell.
Until one summer night, the girl wrapped her arms tightly around her. That head, once always bowed, nestled into the hollow of her neck, and her hot breath warmed Qian Qian’s ear.
“Qian Qian, I’m back.”
Qian Qian suddenly realized that the potted plant she had tended for years had somehow grown into a towering tree, one large enough to shelter her.
A few things to note about this story. If any of them bother you, please steer clear:
1. Both leads are each other’s only partner.
2. There is an eleven-year age gap, with the older woman dating the younger one.
3. There are male supporting characters.
4. The overall ending is happy, with some bittersweet moments along the way.
5. I can’t think of anything else for now. I’ll add more if anything comes to mind.
I’ll try to update every day at 8:30 p.m.
P.S. Internet judges and literary inquisitors are not welcome.
