Xie Zeyu had known from very early on that he couldn't be apart from Ye An. He was like a kite that needed a fine thread to guide it, or it would soon come crashing down.
He thought of himself as that kite. No matter how high he flew, he couldn't leave that thread behind. Otherwise, he would be lost and uneasy, falling into an abyss.
So he cut his studies abroad short and returned to her, sticking close to her and carefully letting his feelings show.
He wanted Ye An to reveal even the smallest hint of affection for him. Until then, he would stay by her side in the name of friendship.
But as time passed, Ye An only drifted farther and farther away.
"Xie Zeyu, I'm selfish and cowardly. I'm not as smart as you, and I'm always wavering and hesitating. I have no good qualities at all, and everyone around us would disapprove of us. Why do you like me? Can't we just stay friends?"
Xie Zeyu looked at the woman before him, who was shouting herself hoarse. Pain filled his expression, shadowed by something dark. "Ye An, you're selfish and cowardly. I'm a fucking mad dog. Anyone who tries to keep me from being with you, I'll bite."
He held the woman who was desperately trying to draw a line between them and spoke gently. "Come on, you're sick, you know that? A healthy person wouldn't put herself down like this. Don't do this, Ye An. I'll always be here with you."
"You have two choices: either let me follow you, or I'll lock you up."
"You know I'm capable of it."

Ye An had known since childhood that Xie Zeyu came from a wealthy family. His family was so rich that even when he stayed at her house in their poor village, his parents could still pay her mother a very high wage.
As they grew up, the gap between their social classes became more and more obvious, reaching its peak the first time Ye An met Xie Zeyu's parents.
People could be worlds apart. Ye An became increasingly aware of that once she was an adult.
She and Xie Zeyu lived under the same sky, but they belonged to different worlds. He was smart, did well in school, and was handsome. He also had the perfect family background. The people he associated with were either famous or enormously wealthy.
He was too dazzling. Next to him, her ordinary self seemed like a stain on his life.
Ye An had never dared to hope that they would be together, and she knew she was no Cinderella.
She only wanted to be a knight, clad in armor and guarding that dazzling sun. She would appear when he needed her, and leave when he no longer did.
Ye An loved him so much that she wanted to remove the huge, irritating "stumbling block" in his life, even though that stone was herself.
But reality always went against her wishes. Xie Zeyu charged toward her like a madman, without holding anything back, following ever closer and chasing ever faster.
