[Rental-Room Fiction] [Grounded] [Bittersweet]
When Xie En came to her to apply for financial aid for students in need, she brought only four sheets of paperwork.
Her mother's death certificate.
Her father's death certificate.
Her grandmother's death certificate.
Her grandfather's death certificate.
She glanced down at the documents, then looked at Xie En.
Xie En mumbled a few words, then pulled a black plastic bag from a backpack patched with three little white rabbits on the shoulder.
Inside were eight bundles of brand-new red banknotes, freshly withdrawn from the bank. Eighty thousand yuan in all.
Xie En reached into the left pocket of her faded white shirt and pulled out a large handful of loose bills, along with a few crumpled small-denomination notes.
Eighty thousand and seventy-two yuan.
The money Xie En had swindled out of her.
