The emperor had been gravely ill for many days. The Imperial Preceptor consulted the gods and spirits, then ordered Pei Yuchuan, son of the Marquis of Yingting, to marry into the palace and bring the sovereign good fortune.
On his wedding night in the palace, the emperor died.
Pei Yuchuan's investiture ceremony had barely ended before he became a widower.
--
Pei Yuchuan transmigrated into this world and ran into this awful mess on his very first day.
The late emperor, Qiu Su, had been the champion of the previous dynasty's devilishly difficult succession struggle. Famous for his grim, cold nature, suspicion, and skill at scheming, he had kept the entire court in fearful submission.
But as soon as Qiu Su died, every demon and monster came crawling out of the woodwork.
The court was full of brutal ministers, with wolves and tigers circling. Every faction was sharpening its knives, and the first person they wanted to kill was Pei Yuchuan, who had supposedly brought about the late emperor's death.
Pei Yuchuan: "...I give up!"
He immediately packed his valuables that very night, planning to fool everyone and make a run for it!
--
The night he planned to flee, the sky was pitch-black, without a star or moon.
Pei Yuchuan slung his bundle over his back and sneaked out of his bedchamber.
Suddenly, a gust of eerie wind swept across the ground, and he heard a faint, cold laugh.
"Where are you going, my empress?"
Pei Yuchuan looked up in terror.
There before him stood the dead emperor, floating in the air with a blank expression, dressed in his burial robes and staring down at him with pitch-black eyes.
Holy crap, a ghost!!!
--
From that day on, there was a ghost in Pei Yuchuan's bedchamber.
The ghost forced him to the imperial desk. A vermilion brush and jade seal lay there, beside a memorial from the ministers requesting an edict to execute the demon empress.
"I speak, you act. Disobey me, and I'll take your life first."
The ghostly spirit stared at him without expression.
Pei Yuchuan trembled. He picked up the vermilion brush, then dropped it again. It clattered across the memorial.
--
Qiu Su was terrifying, but incredibly useful.
With Qiu Su as his cheat code, powerful ministers, corrupt eunuchs, and all matters of state could be dealt with effortlessly.
Guided by her late husband, Pei Yuchuan took control of the imperial tiger tally, purged the court, and gradually became the power-hungry demon empress feared by all the ministers.
But the late emperor's expression grew stranger and stranger, as though he deeply regretted being dead, with only an untouchable wisp of a soul left behind.
Did Qiu Su still want to kill him?
Under that sinister stare, Pei Yuchuan rubbed his neck, feeling a chill creep down his back.
--
Later, after the ministers had prayed to Heaven every day, the day finally came when the late emperor climbed out of his coffin.
The ministers knelt in welcome, begging His Majesty to set the court right and punish the demon empress.
Pei Yuchuan knew it, too: Qiu Su would surely kill him once he was no longer useful. He was doomed.
Another failed attempt to escape.
As Pei Yuchuan stared in terror, Qiu Su shut the palace doors. His body, now casting a shadow, drew closer step by step
Then he pulled Pei Yuchuan into his arms, gently tracing his fingers from Pei Yuchuan's brows and eyes down his face.
"I can finally touch you..."
Qiu Su stared at him with a sinister expression and murmured to himself.
Pei Yuchuan vaguely realized once more...
He... was doomed.
