Bad news: The strange invaded, triggering an interstellar war.
Good news: The war ended, humanity won, and Lancer survived.
Bad news: Lancer was an assassin for the enemy faction, codenamed Black Rabbit. While brainwashed, he assassinated a highly accomplished doctor.
Good news: Lancer wasn't executed. He was exiled to Garbage City.
Lancer didn't mind. All he wanted was a quiet life, and scavenging counted as quiet. He raised a little dog, walking it every day, collecting and selling scrap, and buying it extra food.
What Lancer didn't know was that the program once used to monitor his mental and physical condition and movements had accidentally become bound to Wyatt, the chairman of a conglomerate. The doctor Lancer had assassinated was Wyatt's mentor.
Wyatt kept hearing strange voices:
"Abnormal behavior alert: Black Rabbit has adopted a dog. He needs companionship."
"Black Rabbit is malnourished and weak. Replenish his energy as soon as possible."
"Reminder: Black Rabbit is out scavenging again."
Wyatt: ?
What is going on?
*
After inheriting the conglomerate and becoming its chairman, Wyatt was driven to distraction by the running commentary on Black Rabbit's life.
Black Rabbit bought a little cake. Black Rabbit made a little outfit for his dog. Black Rabbit wants to make friends...
The murder of his mentor was an unforgivable crime! Who cares what his enemy wants to do!
And yet Wyatt kept thinking about Lancer. When he obediently surrendered and accepted his judgment, he had been quiet and silent, never offering a single word in his own defense.
And besides... Lancer was beautiful.

Later, by a twist of fate, Lancer became a mercenary for the conglomerate and then chairman Wyatt's personal bodyguard.
A complete physical overhaul had left Lancer with a simplistic way of thinking and reduced his ability to understand certain things... In other words, he was a little dim.
Lancer tried hard to think with his not-so-bright brain, and still came to one conclusion: the chairman was strange.
The chairman worried there might be an assassin by the hot spring and insisted Lancer strip and bathe with him.
Lancer didn't think an unarmed bodyguard could protect his employer in an emergency.
The chairman thought someone had poisoned his wine and demanded that Lancer taste it first.
Lancer had barely taken a sip when the chairman leaned in and licked his lips, his voice low and husky. "Sweet."
Lancer: ...The taste test isn't over yet. Is the chairman that thirsty?
Then came an even stranger assignment: the chairman, Wyatt, suspected someone had tampered with his mattress and ordered Lancer to lie down and test it.
Lancer lay flat on a mattress worth hundreds of thousands of credits, staring expressionlessly at the ceiling.
This was definitely not something a personal bodyguard should be doing.
No matter how personal a bodyguard was, he shouldn't be lying on the bed.
Before long, Lancer received a marriage registration contract.
Lancer was delighted: I knew there was something strange about the chairman. I'm not that dumb after all!
Lancer was horrified: What? I'm marrying the chairman?!
