[A half-baked tarot reader heroine vs. a gentle hero who came just for you]
Yu Mi has always felt like she's been marked by “misfortune.”
Whenever it rains, she avoids going out if she can, as if the damp air might soak through her already meager share of luck.
One gray afternoon, a friend dragged her out of the house and into a window seat at a corner cafe.
To cheer up her unemployed friend, Yu Mi, a beginner so inexperienced she couldn't even be called a “half-full bucket,” tried to use the occult to offer a little spiritual guidance.
She awkwardly shuffled and cut the cards, then laid them out in a spread. Her movements were clumsy, but she put on a convincing show.
The result, though... was completely wrong.
Just as she was feeling dejected, the wind chime by the door rang, and a man in a gray trench coat walked over to their table.
“Could you do a reading for me?” he asked.
Yu Mi's heart gave a strange little jump. She looked up and met his eyes.
This man... was handsome.
Suddenly, she felt that maybe going out in the rain wasn't all bad.
“Sure. One thousand per reading,” Yu Mi answered as if in a trance.
“That's not expensive.” Li An calmly took the seat opposite her.
Yu Mi kept shuffling the cards to hide her nerves. “If it's wrong, you don't have to pay.”
She secretly vowed she would never take money she hadn't earned.
Li An smiled softly. “I want to know if the person I like will be my girlfriend.”
Yu Mi's fingers froze in midair. Sure enough, nothing good ever came from going out on a rainy day.
She gathered herself and turned over the three cards Li An had drawn. Every one of them meant “yes” in tarot.
“She will.” She pasted on a professional smile. “Go ahead and confess. She'll say yes.”
“Really? How accurate are you?” Li An propped his chin on his hand and looked at her.
“If she says no, I'll give you a full refund.”
“Good.” Li An placed a stack of cash on the table and stared straight into Yu Mi's eyes. “I like you. Be my girlfriend.”
The air froze. Yu Mi stared blankly for a few seconds, then lowered her head and started shuffling the cards again.
This time, she asked a question of her own: What would happen if she said yes to him?
The cards she turned over made her fingertips go cold.
The Tower reversed, Death upright, and the Wheel of Fortune.
She looked up, took the thousand yuan, and replied so calmly that even she was surprised.
“Good cards. I accept.”
At some point, the rain outside had stopped, too.
