[Blurb]
When the alarm rings, it’s time for school. Half-asleep as she brushes her teeth, Shi Jicheng suddenly spots a red thread on her hand in the mirror. It runs through her room and down the hallway, stretching into an unseen distance.
She soon realizes that no one else can see it.
But the red thread doesn’t change anything in her life, and Shi Jicheng gradually stops worrying about it.
She let her guard down way too soon. Can someone tell her why this invisible thread is tangible to her and only her?
From then on, her friends often see Shi Jicheng trip over thin air, get tangled up in something, or be pulled back when she tries to leave.
Her friends: “...?”
At last, Shi Jicheng can’t take it anymore. She decides to follow the red thread and find out what’s at the other end.
On a sweltering summer day, she passes through alleys, streets, and woods, traveling all the way to a neighboring city in another province. With a bottle of water in hand, she walks alone.
At last, she stops beneath a big tree by the roadside for some shade and gives the red thread a tug. It doesn’t pull back at all.
Almost ready to give up, Shi Jicheng squats down by the road without a shred of dignity and takes a sip from her nearly empty bottle. She sees a school team running, children playing, pedestrians passing by... and a cyclist riding past her.
Shi Jicheng’s eyes grow brighter and brighter as she stares at the cyclist. Before she can even celebrate, a powerful pull forces her to run after the bike.
“Ow, ow, ow!” The red thread suddenly goes taut. “Damn it, can’t they feel it?”
Shi Jicheng chases the cyclist, shouting for them to stop, but they don’t react at all.
Panting and drenched in sweat, Shi Jicheng gets nowhere with her shouting. When she spots a long downhill stretch ahead, she flings her water bottle and hits the cyclist squarely on the head. “I said stop!!”
The bike stops. Shi Jicheng gives the cyclist a beating.

Then a transfer student joins her class. The new student introduces themself, smiles at someone, and gives the red thread on their hand a tug.
Shi Jicheng covers her face. “I’m doomed.”
