Every stray cat in the alley was frozen in place by the suited man's low chuckle that winter. None could move a muscle, and only you were lucky enough to be saved.

You came to a sheltering home where two people lived: the owner who saved you, and your owner's grandmother.

Your owner's grandmother set off early each morning on her tricycle. At night, she came back with cardboard and plastic bottles piled on it. She rarely bought vegetables; her own garden kept her supplied all year round.

Your owner came home even later. She always wore the same pair of shoes, washed until they had faded white. Every day she sat at her desk studying until late at night, often getting less than five hours of sleep before waking up to go to school.

One day, your owner fell asleep while studying, and never woke up again.

You felt sorry for how hard your owner always worked. You knew the person she worried about most was her grandmother, so you swore to take good care of her in your owner's place.

And so you became your owner. You turned into a human.

But it wasn't easy to get top marks in your grade just like your owner. A transfer student arrived that day, and he became your deskmate.

If you couldn't convincingly play the part of a human, and of your owner, and get top marks just like her, you risked exposing your secret as a cat.

So you decided to take a dangerous gamble.
