“Good medicine doesn't make a good product.”
Cicadas lie dormant and grow for ten years, then sing for one summer before they die.
Cold Cicada Syndrome is caused by long-term exposure to excessive PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and their unstable by-products. This triggers liver lesions, forming the disease's focus.
As its name suggests, Cold Cicada Syndrome can lie dormant for up to ten years. Once it worsens, the patient's life enters its final countdown. It is incurable.
For a long time, the only drug on the market has been polyene phosphatidyl dicyclohexanol, commonly known as Anchan Tablets. But even if patients take it continuously, it can only delay death as much as possible; it cannot cure the disease.
Zheng Xiao follows in his mother's footsteps. His research group has been studying Cold Cicada Syndrome since his undergraduate days, but they have been stuck at a bottleneck for a long time. In the end, Zheng Xiao, a clinical pharmacy student, gets in touch through several channels with Fu Li, a senior in Chinese pharmacy who is now pursuing a doctorate.
Zheng Xiao is young and proud; Fu Li is composed and indifferent.
Idealism faces realism.
After casually flipping through their research proposal, the latter says coolly, “Personally, I don't have much faith in this project.”
Zheng Xiao demands to know why.
Fu Li is the son of a businessman and sees things clearly: “Good medicine doesn't make a good product.”
A drug that can't cure the disease, one that patients need to take for the rest of their lives, is what makes for a lasting profit stream. Why would the pharmaceutical companies and financial groups behind the vested interests allow that stream to dry up?
Good medicine is left to gather dust, while bad medicine makes a fortune.
That's reality. Ordinary people are powerless to fight it.
You think you can?
“Choose another topic,” Fu Li says.
Zheng Xiao is so angry he slams his lab notebook onto the table.
“I'm a doctor, not a businessman.”
