Bai Ye opened his eyes and found himself in an unfamiliar place.
He remembered nothing except his name.
"Wow! A white fox!" a child shouted, pointing at him.
Bai Ye turned to look at his reflection in the glass: dirty white fur, a slender body, and a black nose.
There was even the word "white" in his name.
He was a white fox, no doubt about it!
2
There were lots of stories in books about foxes repaying kindness. Bai Ye figured he must have traveled over mountains and rivers to repay a debt of gratitude, too.
He had to find his benefactor.
"A Samoyed?"
A man holding a book crouched in front of Bai Ye.
Before Bai Ye could explain who he was, he heard the man take a phone call and say he had no money.
This had to be the poor scholar from the tales!
Bai Ye's eyes lit up, and he followed the man home.

"I'm a white fox." Bai Ye introduced himself to He Chengyu, waiting for the human to look astonished.
He Chengyu: "Oh, really?"
A fox should act like a fox!
To prove he was a white fox, Bai Ye first studied the stories and tried to make love to He Chengyu.
He Chengyu woke in the middle of the night, smothered by dog fur. "...Why are you lying on my face?"
After that failed, Bai Ye came up with another idea: he would help his owner escape poverty.
His first day busking on the street.
"That dog is so skinny. Is it being abused?"
The pitying looks from passersby made Bai Ye so angry that he went home and wolfed down food.

One day, with He Chengyu taking care of him, Bai Ye had grown fluffier and finally got his chance to repay his kindness.
He heroically saved He Chengyu's life.
As for the minor injury he suffered, it wasn't part of the plan, but it didn't dampen Bai Ye's excitement.
Legend had it that once a fox repaid its debt of gratitude, it would have earned enough merit to become human.
He had earned enough merit!
Before he could turn human, He Chengyu took Bai Ye to the vet.
Bai Ye was thinking about what feast to have at home when the doctor's words made his heart sink.
"Your Samoyed is a little overweight. It needs to lose weight."

The day he found out he was a dog, Bai Ye ate only three bowls of rice, outraged.
"Am I fat?" Bai Ye asked He Chengyu.
"You're not fat, just fluffy."
"Would you still want me if I were a dog?" Bai Ye asked He Chengyu, his eyes brimming with tears.
The man helplessly stroked Bai Ye's head. "Whether you're a fox, a dog, or even a human, I won't reject you."
That night, while He Chengyu was asleep, Bai Ye turned into a human.
He stood completely naked in front of the full-length mirror.
Aside from a little baby fat on his face and a slightly rounded bottom, he was still pretty slender everywhere else!
After thinking this optimistically, Bai Ye turned around and pounced on He Chengyu.
