Top architect Jiang Yubai carries the scars of his troubled family in his heart, hiding all his tenderness beneath a cool exterior as he silently loves Shen Xingci for seven years.
Shen Xingci, a freelance photographer with congenital heart disease who was told he would not live past thirty, left for a faraway place after picking a fight, unwilling to burden the person he loved. He faced his illness alone through the long years.
Seven years later, fate brings them together again as work partners. As they tentatively rekindle what they once had, they gradually shed their masks and heal each other's wounds, becoming the only light in one another's darkness.
Jiang Yubai's insomnia eases because of Shen Xingci, while Shen Xingci's vulnerability is gently embraced by Jiang Yubai. Their mutual secret love is finally on the verge of being confessed. They believe they can at last seize the happiness that came too late, never guessing that Shen Xingci's body is already at the end of its strength.
In his final days, one expresses his secret love in a last message, while the other spends the rest of his life honoring his longing. The building named Xingci Tower becomes their promise, one that crosses the boundary between life and death yet can never be fulfilled.
