Tai Zi Changqin has been having a headache lately.
Before his friend Qilin set off on his travels, he casually dumped a little cub on him. "Keep an eye on him for me. If he wrecks the place, it's on me."
Looking at the tearful, pitiful little cutie, Changqin thought, How much damage could he possibly do?
Until the Qilin cub started showing off his abilities.
The little cub is exceptionally gifted. His only problem is that he sleepwalks. And not ordinary sleepwalking: he drags the consciousness of whoever's nearby straight into the river of history, where they splash around together.
From the start, he gets linked to the Tang emperor Li Shimin through a shared dream, giving him a high-definition, immersive experience of the An Lushan Rebellion in the future.
Li Shimin jolts awake from the dream and looks at the little dumpling sleeping soundly, drooling. He falls into deep thought: Is this an auspicious omen or an alarm bell?
To rescue the cub from his chaotic dreams (and, more importantly, to keep him from dreaming up anything else alarming), Changqin has no choice but to take him down to the mortal realm in search of the Melody of Mingqi, while also forming a strange little tour group with the emperor who keeps getting dragged into the cub's sleepwalking.
Other people travel south of the Yangtze. They travel through dreams.
At first, they're merely bystanders in these dreams.
One day, they stroll through Chang'an during the Kaiyuan Era; the next, they watch Cao Cao compose poetry with his spear in hand; the day after that, they're off to the Song Dynasty to study rocket technology.
Until the cub's influence over the dreams grows deeper and his control over them strengthens.
Changqin looks at the two dream-world troublemakers who have started giving maps to Huo Qubing and crib notes to Wang Anshi, and slowly types a question mark.
Weren't they just supposed to keep the cub from dreaming up trouble?
Why are they taking part in the scenarios now, and even trying to change the story?!
[Bonus Scene]
One day, Li Shimin takes Jingyi by the hand and wanders into the Yongle Emperor's Great Encyclopedia ceremony.
In the hall stands a docile animal with an extremely long neck and strange markings. Several foreign envoys proudly introduce it: "This is an auspicious creature presented by our country: a Qilin!"
Jingyi stares at the "Qilin," pouts, and starts shedding big, golden tears. Tugging at Li Shimin's sleeve, he sobs his heart out. "Waaah... Uncle Li! When I grow up... will I turn into a weird long-necked monster like that? I don't want to grow up! It's ugly!"
Li Shimin tries not to laugh and quickly bends down to comfort him. "Don't cry, don't cry. They don't know any better, that's all. They mistook it for a Qilin. Our little Qilin cub is the cutest..."
Halfway through his reassurances, he senses that something is wrong.
He looks up. The entire Hall of Supreme Harmony has fallen silent.
The Yongle Emperor, Zhu Di, sits on the dragon throne, his eyes full of suspicion. The court officials and the foreign envoys all stare at the two newcomers who appeared out of nowhere, their faces filled with shock and disbelief.
Li Shimin: "..."
Jingyi: "Hic... Why is everyone looking at us?"
The air freezes completely.
