"A Branch on Hengyun" tells the forbidden yet profound love story between Shen Shusi, a cool and aloof immortal revered as a master, and Xiao Jinyi, a homeless orphan. Shen Shusi ascended to immortality at sixteen, but after disagreeing with his grandmaster, he withdrew from the world and lived in Hengyun Hall. One snowy night, he found Xiao Jinyi and took the boy in as his disciple. As they spent time together, the boy's kindness and stubbornness stirred the heart Shen Shusi had long since frozen.
Xiao Jinyi carried the secrets of his family's blood feud and the Demon-Sealing Jade Pendant. Under Shen Shusi's protection, he gradually grew stronger. Their feelings for each other blossomed in the course of their daily life together, but they suffered as they struggled against the bounds of their master-and-disciple relationship. After facing life-and-death trials, including searching for medicine in the Cold River, pressure from the immortal sects, and adventures across the four seas, they finally broke free of their shackles and confessed their love.
To heal Shen Shusi's old wounds and stop the Demon Lord from awakening, the two gathered the ingredients for the Seven-Star Meridian-Replenishing Pill. In the final battle, they used the jade pendant's power to seal the Demon Lord. Xiao Jinyi sacrificed himself and vanished, leaving only a remnant soul nestled in Shen Shusi's heart. In the ending, Shen Shusi, his cultivation completely lost, stays by Xiao Jinyi's soul on a snowy mountaintop, fulfilling their vow to "live in seclusion, with only each other."
