Not long after Ji Miao was born, Si Ning, the Valley Master of Qilian Valley, carried her in from the snow.
Si Ning gave her the softest nest and the finest sheep's milk, and told her to call her Mother.
When Ji Miao was two, her snow leopard hunting instincts began to show. Villagers came to Si Ning's door, saying a snow leopard had killed their sheep, and its bloody tracks led straight to her home.
Ji Miao tucked her long tail tightly between her legs. Thinking she had caused trouble and fearing Si Ning would be angry, she hid in the back mountain.
Si Ning searched for seven days. When she found the cave where Ji Miao was hiding, she simply crouched down and gently tapped the stone wall. “Rongrong, come out.”
Ji Miao slowly shuffled out, head lowered, afraid to look at her.
The scolding she expected never came. Si Ning brushed the dust from her fur and smiled. “You bit it, so you bit it. It's not as if we can't afford to pay for it.”
The next time Ji Miao got into trouble, she didn't bite a sheep. She bit Si Ning.
Si Ning: “Rongrong, why did you bite me?”
Ji Miao wouldn't say.
