Wei Tu became the oldest tree in the palace.
Without joy or sorrow, she watched the world pass by like a parade of horses.
She only watched.
She watched the little prince who was always carving his troubles into her roots grow into a mad king feared by all.
She watched the young general who sometimes counted her leaves slowly grow calluses stained with blood beneath his armor.
She watched the little eunuch who peeked at the sunset through her leaves finally learn to measure the depths of people's hearts by their shadows.
Now and then, they would look up at her, their eyes dazed, as if gazing at some delusion.
Later, Wei Tu finally took human form and was invited out of the palace as a spirit of the immortals.
She happened to meet a modern-day young woman. After they joined forces to clean up a mess, they formed a strange little team of immortals, specializing in bizarre disasters.
When they met again, they were envoys ordered to investigate the whereabouts of the sacred tree, but became silent new colleagues by Wei Tu's side.
They clearly recognized her, yet pretended not to. Again and again, they pulled Wei Tu back to their side at the edge of life and death, and stepped in front of her whenever danger arose.
"Don't be afraid. You've seen the filthiest mud. I'll fire it into porcelain and pave a road with it."
It wasn't until they entered the forbidden grounds and saw the glowing string of symbols on the stone wall that they realized it was her birthday, written in code that only another world could understand.
Only then did Wei Tu suddenly understand.
This crumbling world was originally a net, waiting for someone to return. All the breakdowns were just a bug, a window someone had stubbornly left open in the program.
Waiting for her to return.
