[1] After Qi FujI died, he remembered that he had a wife.
He loved his wife dearly.
Knowing she liked white camellias, he planted them across half the courtyard.
In winter, he bought roasted chestnuts to warm against his belly and brought them to her home.
After they married, in a moment of deep affection, he pointed to the half-bed of camellias beneath the eaves and said with a smile, "If I die, bury me beneath the camellias. Sweep the snow into a mound over me, and perhaps next year your husband will grow back."
Later, he really did die.
But without him, what would become of his delicate, gentle wife? And what about their unborn child?
Qi FujI crawled back to the world of the living, step by step, from the City of the Dead and through the darkness of the underworld, returning to their home.
His wife wasn't home. The camellias had bloomed, and so had their daughter.
The sound of hurried footsteps drew nearer.
He turned around.
His wife's pupils trembled. Her chest heaved, and her eyes and cheeks flushed red.
Look, his wife was so overjoyed she was about to cry. Qi FujI lifted his eyelids slightly.
"A-Xue," he called, tilting his head. "I'm back."
[2] Li Shixue's husband had grown back.
But he might not be her husband.
At night, she pulled the poisoned dagger from his heart. He rolled over and pulled her into his arms, and a cold, flowing liquid seeped into every crevice.
Li Shixue looked up, staring at the double pupils that had suddenly appeared in his eyes and his slowly writhing, bait-like white hair.
He lowered his eyes and murmured, "A-Xue, what are you doing?"
His tone was like someone gently asking a mischievous kitten what it was up to.
Disgusting.
Li Shixue felt irritated.
He used to be so easy to kill.
[3] His wife wants to kill him, and she wants to leave him.
She won't leave him. She can't leave them, either.
