-In the Fuzzy Days with My Almost-Ex-Husband-
Before Man Que returned to Bianjing to divorce her husband, she hired people to kidnap them both.
She had already decided on the way there that once it was all over, she didn’t want to go on living.
When she opened her eyes, she was deep in the mountains and had turned into a cat.
She only took cat form at night, returning to normal at daybreak.
To make matters worse, at that very moment her husband, Zhou Chengxue, was holding her suspended in the air by the scruff of her neck.
Zhou Chengxue: “Out here in the wilderness, and there’s a stray cat too.”
Man Que flexed her fluffy black paws.
She had always thought her husband was arrogant by nature, and so she had always been biased against him.
Now that bias had become action.
Her cat-fu rained down on his nose so fast it left afterimages.
Zhou Chengxue covered his nose, his expression pained but not angry.
Of course he wouldn’t get mad at a cat.
Just as over the past two years, no matter how cold or deliberately antagonistic she had been, he had always remained calm and rational.
As if getting angry with her would be beneath him.
After her little crime, Man Que planned to escape under cover of darkness.
Fate grabbed her by the scruff again.
Zhou Chengxue: “Bad cat. You hit someone and still want to run?”
Zhou Chengxue carried Man Que tucked under his arm. When they stopped to rest, he tossed a fish he had pulled from the river in front of her. It was bigger than her cat-sized body.
Man Que sprang upright in terror, then leaped backward.
“Eat.”
The fish’s tail slapped the cold cat face several times.
Man Que realized that Zhou Chengxue could be an absolute menace.
Bells rang along the ancient road, and danger lurked among the towering mountains. Miasma shrouded the forests of the southwest.
They traveled through mountains and rivers, time and again fleeing toward an unknown tomorrow.
-
Zhou Chengxue was born blessed by the heavens, and had never lacked people eager to flatter him.
They were all deferential to his face, yet every one of them secretly hoped the Zhou family would fall.
The emperor arranged his marriage, and he took as his wife the eldest daughter of a fifth-rank official.
She was capable and considerate, a good match for him.
But she had always been biased against him.
They were ambushed on the road. When he woke, his wife was nowhere to be found.
All that remained was a black cat that looked drunk, turning in circles on the spot.
At night, the cat ran off while he was asleep.
Later, he discovered that he turned into a dog during the day.
At that moment, he faced the greatest test of his life as a person (dog).
Man Que, the culprit, crouched five steps away with a beaming smile.
She held a piece of roasted pork belly seasoned with pepper, swinging it back and forth as she repeatedly made coaxing sounds: “Here, kitty, kitty, kitty.”
Zhou Chengxue turned his head, trying with all his might to resist. The fragrant smell of meat crept uncontrollably into his nose.
His tail wagged.
[Reader's Guide]
1. The setting is ancient Yunnan. In those days, much of the region was covered in miasma and fraught with danger. The story uses modern topography for reference, combines it with maps of ancient Yunnan, and adds the author's imagination and artistic touches. It is not meant to be historically accurate. Miasma appears only in certain places, and the story is set in a fictional world!
2. The male and female leads transform into a cat and a dog at different times according to the story's rules. Later, they will become a cat and dog at the same time, and in the end, they will return to human form. The heroine has a white ring around her tail because of the setting, but she is actually a black cat, not a tuxedo cat.
3. A bickering couple who are each other's first love. Neither is perfect. The heroine has her own dark thoughts, and the hero is just as bad. He really is a sharp-tongued guy everyone hates.
