At seventeen, Wen Jin transferred to a high school in Beicheng for personal reasons and moved in with the Lu family, an old friend of her father.
The Lu family was one of Beicheng's most distinguished old-money clans, with a home full of wealth and prestige. Their only grandson, Lu Shinan, was a man among men, exceptional in every way.
Lu Shinan had always been aloof and proud. He looked down on Wen Jin, a distant relative barely connected to him, yet he was always cornering her behind a door and kissing her relentlessly until her tongue went numb.
The night they parted, rain poured from the heavens. A black Koenigsegg sat nearby like a beast devouring the darkness, while the rain cut through the night.
Clenching his teeth, Lu Shinan spoke with savage fury. "Wen Jin, if you dare leave today, don't ever think you can come back!"
The girl in the passenger seat remained impassive. She pushed open the door without hesitation and disappeared into the summer storm.
Years later, a friend sent him a message:
"Shinan, I've got some bad news."
"Brace yourself."
"I heard Wen Jin got married."
"She has a three-year-old daughter."
Wen Jin and Lu Shinan had been entangled for years. No one knew how they had once spent their nights together until dawn, and when she left, she vanished without a trace.
When they met again through work, they both tacitly pretended not to know each other. They didn't even meet each other's eyes.
After the meeting, Wen Jin and the person in charge were asked to stay behind alone.
Her phone kept ringing, so Wen Jin had no choice but to answer. Turning away, she lowered her voice and spoke gently. "I'm still in a meeting. Take the baby to eat first."
When she turned around after the call, she met a pair of eyes dark with fury.
Bonus scene:
When he was young, Lu Shinan was arrogant, untamed, and rebellious. Even after starting work, he remained proud, cold, and sharp-tongued. He never swore when he cursed people, but his employees would sweat buckets during even a single meeting.
The day he saw his daughter at the kindergarten gate, the timid little girl looked up at him, her bright eyes blinking like a juicy little grape.
For the first time in his life, Lu Shinan was at a loss for words.
A few seconds later, the girl ran into her mother's arms and whispered, "Mommy, I'm scared."
