In the history books, Gao Changgong's life is told in just a few brief lines.
Born into the most prominent family of the Northern Qi imperial clan, he was nonetheless denied a peaceful life. He once led his army to Luoyang, driving back the Northern Zhou forces beneath Jinyong City. He was also questioned by the last Northern Qi emperor for "advancing too deep into enemy territory." In the end, he died at the hands of Gao Wei.
The history books tell his story in a few short lines, but no life is ever made up of only those lines.
And the traces left behind by the Princess of Lanling, a daughter of the Zheng clan, are even more faint.
She was a daughter of the Xingyang Zheng clan and the wife of Prince of Lanling.
The records of her life don't even preserve a complete story. She was in the bloom of youth when she married Gao Changgong. No one knows what years she spent by his side; no one remembers if she ever waited up late at night for him to return.
The history books recorded Prince of Lanling's military achievements, but not the story that belonged to the two of them.
